Behind-the-scenes stories are perhaps my favorite historical records, and this one gives us a glimpse of what it was like to start out as a White House staffer during the Lincoln administration. John Hay had poetic aspirations, but his writing talent caught Abe’s eye for governing purposes, which began an influential career in presidential politics and international diplomacy.
